Waning Moon: Shedding & Rest

The full moon has passed. The light is fading. The peak is over. And now begins one of the most underrated phases of the lunar cycle: the waning moon.
Western culture doesn't value rest and release. We're taught to go, go, go — to always be building, achieving, expanding. But nature doesn't work that way, and neither does the moon. The waning phase is essential, and learning to work with it is one of the most powerful skills in moon magic.
THREE WANING PHASES:
WANING GIBBOUS (days 1-3 after full moon):
The moon is still mostly lit but fading. This is the gratitude phase. The full moon brought illumination and release — now take time to appreciate what happened. What did you learn? What did you let go of? What shifted? Gratitude during this phase amplifies the benefits of your full moon work.
LAST QUARTER (days 7-8 after full moon):
Half the moon is lit, decreasing. This is the forgiveness phase. The last quarter asks: what are you still holding onto? What grudges, resentments, or old stories are you carrying? This is the time to forgive — others and yourself. Write down what you need to forgive and release it.
WANING CRESCENT / DARK MOON (days 10-13):
Only a sliver of light remains, then darkness. This is the rest phase. The dark moon (the 1-3 days before the new moon) is the most Yin time of the cycle — a time for deep rest, introspection, and surrender. Do less. Sleep more. Meditate. Don't start anything new. The dark moon is not a time for action — it's a time for being.
HOW TO WORK WITH WANING ENERGY:
1. RELEASE DEEPLY. The waning moon supports all forms of letting go. This is the time for cord cutting, decluttering, ending relationships that have run their course, breaking habits, and clearing space — physical, emotional, and energetic.
2. REST WITHOUT GUILT. The waning moon is asking you to slow down. Don't fight it. If you feel tired during the waning phase, that's not laziness — that's lunar alignment. Rest is not the opposite of productivity. Rest is what makes productivity possible.
3. REFLECT AND INTEGRATE. What did you learn this cycle? What worked? What didn't? The waning phase is the time to harvest wisdom from your experience.
4. PREPARE FOR THE NEW. As the dark moon approaches, begin to feel what you want for the next cycle. Don't set intentions yet — just sense. What is your soul calling for?
5. CLEANSE AND CLEAR. The waning moon is perfect for space clearing, crystal cleansing, and energy work. Smudge your home. Cleanse your crystals in moonlight. Take a cleansing bath with salt and herbs.
PRACTICES FOR THE WANING PHASE:
• CORD CUTTING (see the Ritual library)
• SPACE CLEARING / SMUDGING (see the Ritual library)
• DECLUTTERING your home or digital space
• SALT BATHS for energetic cleansing
• FORGIVENESS WORK — write a letter to someone (including yourself) and burn it
• EXTRA SLEEP and reduced social commitments
• JOURNALING about what you've learned this cycle
THE DARK MOON IS NOT THE SAME AS THE NEW MOON:
People often confuse these. The dark moon is the 1-3 days BEFORE the new moon — the deepest waning phase, when the moon is completely invisible. The new moon is the moment the cycle begins again. The dark moon is the void before creation. It's the most introspective, Yin, still time of the entire cycle. Honor it with quiet.
Practice Exercise
During this waning phase, do one releasing practice — cord cutting, smudging, a salt bath, or forgiveness work. Then give yourself permission to rest more than usual. Notice how it feels to align with the waning energy instead of pushing against it.
Reflection Question
What have you been holding onto past its natural ending? What would it feel like to release it during this waning phase? What are you afraid will happen if you let go?
